Gyrn Goch

You'll know you're in the right spot when Caernarfon disappears behind you and the landscape opens up proper. Gyrn Goch is a modest peak - nothing intimidating - but it delivers exactly what a Welsh hillside should: views that stretch all the way to the Menai Strait on a clear day, and the kind of wind that makes you feel like you've actually earned the walk.

It's a straightforward ascent from the base, taking most walkers between 45 minutes and an hour to reach the summit. The path isn't technical, but it's steeper than it looks from below, so pace yourself if you've got kids in tow. Once you're up, you've got proper panoramic stuff - mountains rolling away, patches of moorland, and if you time it right, that golden hour light that makes photographers genuinely happy.

Families with older children will find it manageable, though younger ones might find the leg a bit much. History buffs won't find much at the top itself, but the surrounding area is saturated with it - Caernarfon Castle sits nearby, a proper fortress that dominates the town. If you're camping at Aberafon or Gyrn Ddu just down the road, Gyrn Goch makes a cracking morning sortie before breakfast. It's free, it's accessible from the campsite car parks, and it doesn't demand a full day. In bad weather it's not worth it - visibility evaporates fast up here - but on a decent day, it's well worth the walk.
