Hackney Marshes Local Nature Reserve

The marshes stretch out flat and open just outside Paignton, a proper contrast to the seaside hustle you've left behind. It's wetland, managed for wildlife, with paths that wind through reed beds and across boggy ground where you might spot herons if you're quiet enough. The walking's easy on your legs but muddy on your boots - bring proper footwear.

This is a working nature reserve, not a manicured attraction. You come here to watch birds, spot dragonflies in summer, and feel genuinely away from things despite being minutes from the holiday parks clustered nearby. Families with school-age children get the most from it, especially if they're keen on spotting wildlife. Young kids under five might find it a bit samey after half an hour unless you're seriously into birds.

There's no entrance fee, no visitor centre, no café. Parking is basic. You need two or three hours maximum to cover the main paths, though you could potter about longer if you're a twitcher. Autumn and spring are when the bird activity kicks off most noticeably.

If you're based at Dornafield or Parkdean Resorts just up the road, this breaks up a coastal holiday nicely. It's the sort of place where you actually notice the quiet. Not dramatic, but genuinely peaceful - and that's rarer than it should be around here.
