Hafod Mill Wood

The woodland walk at Hafod Mill Wood near Swansea is one of those places that creeps up on you. There's a proper sense of being away from it all despite being barely twenty minutes from the city - old oaks and beeches create a dense canopy, and the forest floor stays boggy enough that you'll need decent shoes. The mill itself is long gone, but you can still find traces of the old workings if you look closely, which appeals to anyone with a taste for industrial archaeology. Most people spend between an hour and ninety minutes here, which feels about right before the paths start to loop back on themselves. The woodland is genuinely peaceful, the sort of place where you notice bird calls you wouldn't hear elsewhere. It's free to access, and there's no formal visitor infrastructure - just trails through trees. This works in its favour. Families with kids old enough to manage muddy terrain will get on well with it, though toddlers might find the uneven ground tedious. Walkers who like a bit of history mixed with their exercise will find it rewarding. If you're staying at Gateway Resort or South Wales Touring Park, it's a sensible half-day outing, closer than many of the better-known attractions in Carmarthenshire.
