Hafod Woodland Car Park

The car park itself is unremarkable - a basic lay-by really, tucked into the Shropshire countryside near Wrexham. But that's rather the point. This is where people pull in to access the Hafod estate and its woodland walks, not a destination in its own right.

What draws visitors here is the network of trails fanning out into proper old-growth forest. You're looking at mixed broadleaf woodland with streams, some decent elevation changes, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you left the city. The walks range from gentle half-hour loops to longer treks of a couple of hours if you're keen. There's history threaded through it all - this was a planned landscape, though you won't find grand mansions or manicured gardens. It's genuinely wild now, which many will prefer.

Families with school-age kids will get the most from this. There's enough variety in the terrain to keep them interested, and the streams are always a draw. Serious walkers appreciate it for the peace and the actual woodland experience rather than tourist-trap peaks.

There's no charge, no facilities to speak of at the car park itself (bring a packed lunch), and you can do what you like with the time - pop in for half an hour or spend the afternoon. Spring is best for bluebells and birdsong. The nearest proper base is Foxtail Holiday Park, about six miles away, which gives you decent access without being on top of it.
