Hagg Wood

You won't find much fanfare about Hagg Wood, and that's rather the point. It's a proper woodland walk just outside York - the sort of place locals slip into on a grey afternoon without thinking twice. Tall trees, decent paths, and enough space to actually hear yourself think. It's free, naturally, and you can spend anywhere from 45 minutes to a couple of hours wandering about depending on how lost you want to get.

Families with younger kids will manage it fine on decent boots. The paths are manageable rather than technical, though it can get muddy after rain - which, given this is North Yorkshire, is most of the time. Older children might find a quick loop dull, but combine it with a proper expedition elsewhere and it works as a gentle morning before something more ambitious. Dog walkers absolutely love it, and you'll see plenty of them.

The real win is proximity. You're barely outside York, so it slots perfectly into a holiday based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Swallowtails, Black Bull, or Lakeside are all within spitting distance. Hit Hagg Wood for an hour, then head into the city proper for lunch. Don't expect drama or Instagram moments. Expect the kind of woodland that makes you remember why walking matters. It's understated, free, and genuinely useful when you're based in the area.
