York Bird of Prey Centre

The birds here are serious business. York Bird of Prey Centre isn't one of those cramped aviaries where you shuffle past tired-looking owls; this is the real thing, full of hawks, falcons, and eagles that have you properly paying attention. The flying displays are the main draw - watching a Harris hawk work a crowded field or a golden eagle lock onto its handler's glove never gets old, even if you've seen it before.

It's brilliant for families with older children and anyone who can't resist raptors. Younger kids might find the sitting-still-and-watching bit tedious unless they're already keen on birds. The centre sits just outside York itself, making it an easy add-on to a day in the city if you've got transport sorted.

Allow a good two to three hours if you want to see a full flying display and have a proper look round. The grounds are spacious enough that it doesn't feel cramped, even during busy periods. You'll want decent weather for the displays to run, so check ahead - rain can mean they're cancelled or scaled back.
