The gardens at Hampton Court sit on the outskirts of Hereford, a proper slice of Elizabethan heritage that doesn't shout about itself. You're looking at one of England's finest examples of Tudor architecture paired with grounds that have been carefully restored over the years - all woodland walks, formal gardens, and the kind of lawns that make you understand why people got obsessed with gardening in the 16th century.

What you actually do here depends on the season. Summer brings the house open to visitors, with period rooms and the sort of detail work that appeals to anyone who cares about how people actually lived 400-odd years ago. The gardens themselves are the real draw though - mature trees, water features, and enough space to lose an afternoon without trying. History types will appreciate the connection to the Royal Family and the courtly life of the Tudor era. Families with younger children might find it a bit sedate unless they're the type who enjoy a ramble and a picnic.

It's a decent half-day venture from any of the nearby parks - Kingfisher Meadow is only 2.4 miles away, making it walkable if you're not fussed about the car. The grounds are open year-round, though opening hours vary, so ring ahead before you head over. Admission costs a few quid, and it's well worth the detour if you're basing yourself in Herefordshire for a week. On its own it's not a full day out, but combine it with a proper wander through Hereford town centre and you've got something solid.
