Hamworthy Park

Just a short walk from Poole town centre, Hamworthy Park sits on the edge of Poole Harbour - a working nature reserve that feels worlds away from the suburbs creeping up around it. The main draw here is the wet grassland and shallow water, which means serious birdwatchers will have their binoculars out within minutes. Winter brings thousands of wildfowl; spring and autumn migrants turn up regularly enough to keep the twitchers happy year-round.

It's free to access and there are proper walking trails threading through the reserve, though don't expect dramatic scenery or rugged terrain. This is gentle, flat ground - fine for families with young kids or anyone after a straightforward morning stroll without the commitment of a full country walk. Allow an hour to two hours depending on how much you want to dawdle and peer at birds through the reed beds.

The reserve works brilliantly as a half-day add-on if you're based at Haven Rockley Park just up the road - barely a mile away - or any of the other holiday parks scattered around Poole. It breaks up a park week nicely without requiring a massive expedition. Go early morning if the weather's decent and you'll avoid the crowds. The habitat's fragile and precious, so stick to the paths and keep noise down, especially during breeding season.

Not a stunner in the postcard sense, but absolutely worth the detour if you're interested in what lives on our doorstep.
