Hanger Wood

The beech and oak trees here create a proper cathedral of shade that's genuinely lovely on a hot summer's day. Hanger Wood sits just outside Sevenoaks and offers the kind of walk where you actually feel like you've stepped away from things, even though you're barely ten minutes from town.

It's a working forest rather than a manicured country estate, which means the paths are decent but you won't find cafes or visitor centres. The woodland floor is thick with leaf litter in autumn, and there's enough variation in the terrain to keep most walkers interested for a couple of hours. Kids seem to enjoy the scrambling potential and the general sense of disappearing into something wild.

You can wander through here for as long as you want - there's no formal entry point or charges that I'm aware of, just pull in somewhere sensible nearby and go. Spring's particularly good when the bluebells come through, though it gets muddy underfoot after rain. Summer's brilliant if you're trying to escape the heat.

If you're staying at Thriftwood Country Park or Gatehouse Wood Country Park, both just a handful of miles away, Hanger Wood makes an easy morning or afternoon excursion. It won't set your pulse racing like the South Downs would, but as a straightforward woodland walk that doesn't demand much planning, it's reliable. Locals clearly know it well, which says something about its staying power.
