Hanging Bank Wood

Walk into Hanging Bank Wood and you're immediately wrapped in that proper dense Kent woodland feel - the kind where the canopy is so thick the light comes down in slanted rays and everything smells of damp leaf litter and rich earth.

It's a genuine forest rather than a manicured woodland walk, which means fallen trees, uneven terrain, and stretches where the path isn't obvious. That's exactly why it's worth your time. Walkers who enjoy a bit of navigation will find it more interesting than the usual Canterbury-area rambles, and children old enough not to whine about muddy boots tend to love the wildness of it.

The wood sits close enough to Canterbury for a morning or afternoon outing without burning half your holiday on the drive. Coming from Dog & Duck Leisure Park or The Foxhunter Park, you're looking at less than twenty minutes in the car. Both parks work well as bases if you're planning a few days exploring this corner of Kent.

Timing-wise, spring and early summer are exceptional here - bluebells if you hit it right, and the canopy is still letting enough light through to see where you're treading. Autumn's lovely too, though the undergrowth gets thicker. Go after decent weather and the paths are manageable; straight after rain and you'll be slipping about.

Don't expect a visitor centre or facilities. Bring water, dress for the weather, and give yourself at least ninety minutes to two hours. It's the sort of place that reminds you why you came to Kent in the first place.
