Hangingwood Plantation

Walk into Hangingwood Plantation near Ware and you're into proper old-growth woodland - the kind where the canopy is so thick in summer that you're walking in half-light even at noon. It's a working forest, not some manicured nature reserve, which gives it a real sense of being somewhere actual and useful rather than just pretty.

The main draw here is the walking. Paths wind through beech and oak, and in autumn the leaf litter is thick enough that you barely hear your own footsteps. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of - you just turn up and get on with it. Families with primary-school age kids will do well enough for an hour or so, though once you're off the main tracks it gets a bit boggy underfoot when it's been wet. Serious walkers and photographers looking for woodland light will find more to occupy them.

Timing-wise, spring brings bluebells in scattered patches, and late autumn is genuinely atmospheric when the mist sits low. Summer's pleasant enough but you lose sight of the woodland structure under all that green.

It's only six miles or so from Church Farm Ardeley if you're camping in the area, making it an easy morning or afternoon outing to break up a park-based holiday. Free access, naturally - there's nowhere to pay even if you wanted to.
