RAF Hunsdon

The runways are long gone, but RAF Hunsdon still feels like a place where something mattered. This former fighter station east of Ware played a proper role during the Second World War, hosting squadrons that flew Spitfires and Hurricanes across the Channel. Today it's mostly heritage - a working airfield where you can still see the bones of what was, if you know where to look.

You won't find much in the way of formal exhibits or visitor facilities here. This isn't a museum with cafes and gift shops. Instead, it's more of a pilgrimage spot for aviation history enthusiasts and military buffs who want to stand where pilots once scrambled to their planes. The landscape itself tells the story - dispersed buildings, taxiways cutting through farmland, the weight of 1940s urgency somehow still present in the layout.

Visiting takes an hour or two depending on how deep you want to go into the details. Spring or summer is best when the grass is cut and you can properly walk the perimeter. Winter's muddy and feels less rewarding. It's the sort of place that matters more if you've got a genuine interest in wartime aviation or military history - families with young kids might find it a bit abstract and open-ended.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Toad Abode is closest at just 1.5 miles - this makes a solid half-day add-on to explore the region. Ware itself is worth a walk around, and it's close enough that you could easily combine it with other Hertfordshire sites without much driving.
