Harbour

Dunbar's harbour is where the town actually comes alive. The working waterfront hasn't been prettified into oblivion - fishing boats still tie up here, gulls circle overhead, and there's a proper sense of activity rather than museum-like preservation.

You'll spend a good twenty minutes wandering along the quay, watching the boats come and go and reading the plaques about John Muir and the town's maritime past. The breakwater is walkable on calm days and gives you proper views back across the Firth of Forth towards Fife. On a clear afternoon with the light hitting the water right, it's genuinely lovely.

It's less about doing something and more about soaking up atmosphere. Families with younger kids might get restless after half an hour - there's no visitor centre or cafe directly on the harbour, though Dunbar town centre is just a short walk away. Photographers will find themselves lingering longer, especially if the fishing boats are unloading their catch.

Here's the thing though: the harbour works best as part of a broader Dunbar visit rather than a destination in itself. Combine it with a walk around the old castle ruins or a beach session at Belhaven Bay Caravan Park down the coast - that's where you'll really make a morning of it. Free to look at, naturally, and accessible any time. Go early on a weekday if you want fewer tourists and more actual harbourside work to watch.
