Hard Head Plantation

The woodland around Hard Head Plantation, just outside Settle, is one of those places you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's proper forest - dense conifers mixed with older broadleaf growth, the kind of place where the light filters through in shafts and the ground stays damp even after a dry spell.

You're looking at a working plantation, so don't expect manicured paths or visitor facilities. What you get instead is genuine woodland walking with good cover when the weather turns - and in Lancashire, it usually does. The site sits high enough to offer decent views across the Ribble Valley when you break through the tree line, though you'll earn them with a bit of a climb.

This is solid territory for walkers who know their way around a map. Families with young kids might find it a bit relentless and featureless compared to, say, a proper country estate. The real appeal is for people who want to walk without crowds, to breathe proper forest air, and to understand what commercial timber production looks like in the Pennines.

Calder Farm, just 5.4 miles away, makes a logical base if you're planning a forest-focused weekend. The camping pods are well-reviewed and it's close enough that you could do a morning walk here, lunch in Settle, then explore the surrounding moorland in the afternoon. Allow two to three hours depending on how deep you want to go into the trees.
