Hard Knot Hill

The walk up Hard Knot Hill from Clitheroe is short, sharp, and honestly a bit of a slog for what you get at the end. The climb itself takes roughly 20 minutes if you're reasonably fit, following paths through moorland that get steeper as you near the summit. What makes it worth the effort is the view - on a clear day you're looking out across the Ribble Valley towards Pendle Hill, with Clitheroe's castle ruins visible below like a toy fort.

It's the sort of walk that appeals to families wanting a quick win without committing to a full day on the fells. Children aged eight and up will manage it fine, though younger legs might need proper encouragement. The path can be muddy and the exposed ridge at the top catches wind properly, so dress for it.

If you're staying at one of the local glamping spots - Hedgerow is closest at 3.2 miles away, or Thornton Hall if you want something slightly further out - Hard Knot fits nicely as a morning activity before exploring Clitheroe proper. The town itself has the castle worth a poke around, and decent cafes for a post-walk brew. Holgates Ribble Valley and Peaks and Pods are both within six miles if you're basing yourself for a longer stay in the area.

Allow two hours start to finish, including a rest on top. It's free, obviously - just turn up and go. Best tackled when the weather's decent because the views are the whole point, and mist renders it rather pointless.
