Harden Reservoir

The water at Harden Reservoir sits cupped between Yorkshire moorland about 4 miles north of Sheffield, and it's the sort of place that rewards a quiet morning walk far more than it does a rushed afternoon visit. The reservoir itself is genuinely lovely - a long stretch of water that reflects the sky properly when the weather cooperates, with decent footpaths running along both banks that give you proper views without requiring any serious climbing.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a dramatic spot, and there's no visitor centre or tea room, so you won't find families treating it like a theme park. Instead, it's the kind of place where you come to clear your head, spot the occasional birdwatcher with serious binoculars, and remember why you came to Yorkshire in the first place. The eastern bank walk takes about an hour for a decent loop, and it's flat enough that you won't arrive breathless but varied enough that it never feels like trudging. In autumn the water takes on brooding colours that photographs can't quite capture.

Stay at one of the nearby campsites - Thurlmoor Farm and Whitegate Leisure are both within striking distance - and you've got a proper base for exploring the wider moorland. It costs nothing to visit, and there's adequate parking. Avoid peak times if you can. Early weekday mornings in spring when the light's good and the moor birds are vocal - that's when it's genuinely worth the drive up from Sheffield.
