Harewood Park

The woodland and grassland here sprawl across what feels like proper countryside, though you're barely ten minutes from Wetherby. Harewood Park is one of those reserves that rewards a slow walk rather than a quick dash - paths wind through mature trees where you'll spot woodpeckers and nuthatches if you're quiet enough, then open out onto meadows that are brilliant for wildflowers in late spring.

It's the kind of place families with restless kids might find a bit thin on attractions - there's no visitor centre or café, just the walking itself. But if you're after a decent two-hour ramble with a reasonable chance of seeing something interesting, it delivers. The woodland trails are easy enough for school-age children, though muddy patches are inevitable after rain.

Walkers and birdwatchers will get the most from it. Bring binoculars and a decent guidebook. The open grassland areas are good for spotting rabbits and deer early in the morning, and the whole reserve is free to access, which is just as it should be.

If you're staying at nearby Maustin Park or Haighfield Holiday Park - both brilliantly rated spots just a few minutes' drive away - Harewood makes a worthwhile morning out before lunch back at your caravan. It's not going to be the highlight of your trip, but it's a proper addition to a week spent exploring the Wetherby area.
