Harlakenden Wood

A proper woodland walk through ancient trees just outside Bethersden - that's what Harlakenden Wood offers. The forest sits thick with old growth, the kind of place where the canopy gets properly dense and the light filters through in that particular way only mature woodland manages. There are paths threading through, though they're not manicured affairs - expect roots, mud after rain, and the occasional spot where you need to watch your footing.

This works well for anyone wanting a genuine forest experience rather than a park circuit. Walkers will appreciate the genuine woodland atmosphere. Families with older kids can manage it fine, though younger ones might find it a bit heavy-going if they're after obvious attractions or play equipment - there's none of that here. The wood's the thing.

You're looking at allowing a couple of hours minimum if you want to actually explore rather than just pop in and out. There's no visitor infrastructure that I can find, so bring water and dress for the weather. Autumn's particularly good - the floor becomes a mass of colour and the light works beautifully through the thinning canopy.

If you're camping at any of the nearby sites - Wildside, Longberry Farm, or Broadhembury - this sits close enough for an afternoon venture without the faff of driving across half the county. Pair it with walks around the broader Bethersden area and you've got decent territory to cover. It's not the kind of place you'll photograph for Instagram, but that's rather the point.
