Harrier Hide

Twenty minutes through the heather and gorse from the main Studland Heath path, this wooden viewing platform sits quietly overlooking the wetlands where Poole Harbour meets the heath. Built specifically for watching birds of prey, the hide offers brilliant views across the reed beds where marsh harriers quarter the ground in lazy circles.

Birdwatchers will have a field day here, particularly during winter months when the resident population swells with migrants. The platform faces west, so afternoon light is perfect for photography, though bring binoculars - the birds can be quite distant. Even without the harriers, there's plenty to spot: Dartford warblers flitting through the gorse, stonechats perched on fence posts, and the occasional glimpse of a red deer picking its way through the undergrowth.

Families staying at nearby Haven Rockley Park or Sandford Holiday Park will find this a proper contrast to beach days, though younger children might get restless after half an hour unless they're keen on wildlife. The walk from the nearest car park takes about twenty minutes each way over fairly rough terrain - definitely more suitable for older kids and adults.

Access is free and unrestricted, making it worth combining with a longer walk across Studland Heath towards Old Harry Rocks. Pack a thermos and some patience; the best wildlife watching happens when you sit still and wait.
