Harrowdown Hill

This modest rise just outside Witney offers proper views across the Oxfordshire countryside without requiring fell boots or a packed lunch. The walk up takes about twenty minutes from the road, and you're rewarded with an outlook that stretches toward the Cotswolds on a clear day.

It's the kind of spot that works best for families with younger walkers or anyone who wants a genuine countryside stroll without the commitment of a longer ramble. Older kids won't be bored, though adults looking for a dramatic peak might find it a bit underwhelming. The hill itself is accessible year-round and costs nothing.

What makes this worth the detour is how it fits between visits to the nearby caravan parks like Lincoln Farm or Hardwick Parks - both within spitting distance. You can easily combine it with exploring Witney itself, which has enough pubs and shops to justify the drive. The Real Campsite and Valley Farm further afield offer slightly more atmosphere if you're planning a proper overnight stay in the area.

Go on a weekday morning if you can. Weekends bring dog walkers and runners, which is fine, but the peace is notably better early on. Allow an hour total, including the drive from Witney. Bring decent shoes rather than trainers; the ground can be boggy in winter. On balance, it's a solid addition to a Cotswolds holiday rather than a destination in itself.
