Hartland Methodist Church

A whitewashed Methodist chapel sits quietly on the edge of Hartland, a few miles inland from Bideford. It's the sort of building you'd walk past without thinking twice - except the interior stops you cold. The craftsmanship is genuinely impressive: intricate wooden galleries, a proper old organ, and the kind of light that comes through those tall sash windows and makes everything feel momentous, even when it's empty.

This is where you come if you're interested in 19th-century Methodism or simply appreciate the way communities built their own meeting houses with real care and skill. The architecture isn't showy - it's honest, unpretentious, exactly what a working congregation could afford. History types will find plenty to examine. Families with young children might find it a bit static, but it's peaceful and costs nothing to step inside.
