Hatton Wood

Walking into Hatton Wood is like stepping into proper countryside without needing to trek for hours. This Warwickshire forest sits just outside Warwick and offers the kind of quiet that actually feels restorative - no crowds, no car parks crammed with day-trippers, just trees and space. The woodland is manageable for families with younger kids; paths are clear enough that you won't spend the whole time negotiating tangled roots, though it's not manicured either. It's the sort of place where a good two-hour ramble works perfectly, or you can do a shorter loop if the weather turns.

You'll see mixed woodland - oaks, beech, the usual mix - with patches of clear ground that are proper lovely in spring. There's something satisfying about walking through an actual working forest rather than a tourist attraction masquerading as one. Walkers will get more out of this than sightseers; bring proper boots and don't expect interpretation boards or a visitor centre.

Access details are a bit vague, but as with most woodland in England, you can generally assume public rights of way exist - check before you go if you need certainty. It's free, or at least should be. The location makes it brilliant for a park holiday based around Warwick itself. You're only five to six miles from Green Gates, The Apple Farm, or Wootton Park's glamping pods, so you could easily combine woodland walks here with visiting Warwick Castle or heading over to Stratford-upon-Avon. Go early on weekends if you want solitude.
