Haughmond Hill

The walk up Haughmond Hill takes about twenty minutes from the car park, and it's steep enough to feel like proper exercise but not so brutal that you'll regret it halfway. The summit sits just north of Shrewsbury, offering wide views across the Shropshire countryside - on a clear day you can see for miles, and the sweep of landscape definitely justifies the climb.

What you get at the top is a large Iron Age hillfort, though honestly the earthworks aren't as dramatic as some - the real reward is the view itself and the sense of space. There's a communications mast up there which sounds grim but somehow doesn't ruin it. The slopes are open grassland dotted with gorse, and walkers will appreciate that the whole thing is manageable as a quick leg-stretch or can tie in with longer rambles across the area.

Families with primary-aged kids will have fun on the ascent, though there's not much to do once you're up there beyond looking and picnicking. Bring decent shoes - it gets muddy after rain. It's free to access, and there's a car park with basic facilities.
