Haunchwood

Haunchwood is a proper woodland spot on the Leicestershire-Warwickshire border, just outside Atherstone. It's the sort of place where you can lose an hour wandering between oak and birch without seeing another soul - which is either brilliant or lonely depending on your mood. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter, and there are enough twisting paths to keep you guessing where you'll end up next.

Walkers will find real value here. It's not dramatic or particularly famous, which means it stays peaceful even on weekends. The terrain is straightforward enough for families with kids old enough to manage uneven ground, though buggies would struggle. You're looking at a good two hours if you want to do a proper circuit, or thirty minutes for a quick loop.

Bring decent boots. The paths can be boggy after rain, and tree roots lurk everywhere waiting to catch your toe. Spring's when the woodland floor comes alive with bluebells and wild garlic - worth timing your visit for.

If you're based at Lime Tree Caravan Park or Ettie's Field nearby, Haunchwood makes an easy morning or afternoon walk without needing to pile everyone in the car. It won't wow you, but it will give you proper forest quiet. That's the whole point, really.
