Haverfordwest Castle

Substantial stone walls rise straight from the town centre, making this one of the most dramatically positioned ruins in Wales. Built by Gilbert de Clare in the late 1100s, the castle dominates Haverfordwest's skyline from its rocky perch above the River Cleddau.

Walking the perimeter takes about twenty minutes, though you'll want longer to properly explore the gatehouse and remaining towers. The views across the town and surrounding countryside are properly impressive - you can see why the Normans chose this spot. Kids will love clambering about the walls, though parents should keep a close eye as some drops are steep.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the castle's role in the Civil War, when it changed hands several times before Cromwell's forces finally demolished much of it. What remains gives a good sense of how formidable this fortress once was.

The castle sits right in Haverfordwest's centre, making it an easy stop if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Three Fields Campsite or Creampots Touring Caravan & Camping Park. It works well as part of a day exploring the town before heading to the coast. Allow an hour unless you're particularly keen on medieval architecture.

Free to wander around the exterior, though I'm not certain about access to the interior structures. Worth checking locally if you want the full experience.
