Havering's Grove

Ancient woodland on the doorstep of Billericay, Havering's Grove is proper Essex - old oaks, tangled undergrowth, and enough space to actually lose yourself for an afternoon. Families with small kids might find an hour here stretches thin unless they're the mud-and-sticks type. Birdwatchers and photography types will clock something worth stopping for, especially early morning.

It's free to enter and there's no formal time restriction, though you'll want daylight. Allow ninety minutes to two hours for a decent circuit. Being Essex woodland, don't expect drama or views - this is about atmosphere and the simple act of being among trees that have been here for centuries.
