A decent woodland walk just outside Dunmow, Hawland Wood is the sort of place that rewards an afternoon rather than demanding a pilgrimage. Walkers will find it satisfying rather than spectacular. If you're after dramatic views or proper terrain challenges, look elsewhere. But if you want a couple of hours in decent woodland without the tourist crowds, this works.

The closest thing to an attraction town is Dunmow itself, which is fine for a post-walk coffee. What makes Hawland Wood genuinely useful is how it slots into a park holiday in the area. Dairymeade Farm Glamping sits just 1.6 miles away - perfect if you're staying there and want a morning stroll before breakfast. Head there on a quieter weekday if you can. Summer weekends bring the Essex day-trippers, and it loses some charm. Allow two hours maximum, bring wellies if there's been rain.
