Haxter Wood

The woodland around Haxter feels properly remote despite being just outside Plymouth's sprawl. Ancient oaks and birches create a dense canopy that blocks out the worst of the weather, and underfoot the ground is soft with decades of leaf mulch. It's the sort of place where you genuinely lose track of time.

Walkers will find genuine value here. The woodland isn't manicured or fenced off - it's proper forest, which means routes aren't always obvious and you'll need to pay attention to where you're treading. That's part of the appeal for anyone bored stiff by obvious park trails. The whole area rewards poking about, particularly if you're into spotting wildlife or just want somewhere quiet to think.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I could find, so come prepared. Bring water, wear decent boots, and give yourself at least two hours to explore without rushing. It's free to access, which is a bonus.

If you're based at Dartmoor Domes nearby, Haxter Wood makes an excellent half-day outing before or after exploring the broader Dartmoor landscape. It's closer than some of the better-known woodland spots and feels less tramped over. Not somewhere to drag reluctant children expecting a playground experience - but for families who actually enjoy getting muddy and discovering things, it's well worth the detour from Plymouth.
