Hay-on-Wye Library

The library sits on the main drag through Hay-on-Wye, which sounds ordinary until you remember this is a town that runs on books. It's not a sprawling Victorian monument or anything - more of a working local library that happens to exist in one of Britain's most literary places. You'll find the usual mix of fiction, reference materials, and local information, but what makes it worth ducking into is the sheer context. This is Hay, where Richard Booth built an empire from second-hand books in the 1960s, and the whole town still breathes that obsession.

It's genuinely useful if you're staying at By the Wye Glamping or Hay-on-Wye Caravan Park nearby and the weather turns miserable - which it does, this being Wales. Pick up a local map, grab something about the Wye Valley walks, maybe find a biography you've been meaning to read. Don't expect to lose hours here; it's a proper village library serving a proper village, not a destination in itself. But if you're already in Hay prowling the bookshops and galleries, it's a logical stop. The staff usually know the area well enough to point you toward walking routes or recommend which nearby pubs serve decent food. Free to browse, and you can join if you're staying locally. Allow thirty minutes, tops, unless you're the sort who gets lost in the stacks.
