Hayes Wood

Walking into Hayes Wood feels like stepping into proper old England. The forest sits just outside Cheltenham and offers exactly what you want from a woodland ramble without the crowds you'd get at the major tourist spots. Ancient trees tower overhead, the paths are well-trodden and easy to follow, and there's genuine peace to be found here.

It's a straightforward woodland walk rather than a themed attraction. You're simply moving through the trees, breathing in that damp forest air, listening for wildlife. The canopy is thick enough to stay cool even on warm days, and after rain it has that rich earthy smell that makes you remember why you left the car park in the first place. Most people spend between 45 minutes and two hours here depending on how far they venture.

Families with young walkers will manage it without drama - no steep climbs or technical bits. Older kids might find it a touch quiet if they're expecting adventure playgrounds and information boards, but anyone who enjoys getting out on foot will find it worthwhile. There's no entrance fee and facilities are minimal, so bring water.

If you're staying at Bourton-on-the-Water Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the road, this makes an excellent morning outing. Pair it with an afternoon at Bourton itself - the village is genuinely lovely - and you've got a solid day sorted. Less fussy than some Cotswolds spots, more honest.
