Hazel Comb

The walk through Hazel Comb is one of those quiet Sussex experiences that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards you properly if you know where to look. It's woodland, old-growth stuff, thick with beech and hazel that transforms the light into something almost underwater on overcast days. The forest floor here is proper springy with centuries of leaf mould, and you'll find yourself moving slower than you'd expect, just taking it in.

This is walker's territory, frankly. Not dramatic or showy. No dramatic viewpoints or ruined castles at the summit - just good, solid woodland that feels genuinely remote despite being within reach of Petworth. The paths wind through without fuss, and if you time it right in autumn, the colour is genuine rather than Instagram-filtered. Spring brings bluebells if you're lucky, though you'll need to check locally what the year's been like.

Allow two to three hours for a proper wander. Kids over ten who actually like walking will get something from it; younger ones might find it a bit samey. History buffs won't find what they're after here - this is about the woodland itself, not what happened in it.

For a park-based holiday, Hazel Comb works well as a half-day excursion from Camp and Touring site at Old Farm Slindon, just five miles away. It breaks up the routine without demanding a massive commitment. Admission is free, which is just how it should be.
