Hazeley Heath

The heath spreads out in all directions - open, windswept, and properly wild for somewhere this close to the Surrey-Hampshire border. Hazeley Heath is one of those rare stretches where you can actually breathe, where the heather and gorse take over and the car parks feel a million miles away.

It's a walker's place, really. No visitor centre, no facilities, no faffing about. What you get is space to roam, paths that meander through heathland that could easily swallow an afternoon. In late summer the heather blooms purple and magenta, which is lovely, though by autumn it browns into something more austere. The views aren't dramatic - this isn't moorland - but there's something honest about it.

Historically, heathland like this once covered vast swathes of southern England. Now it's rare enough that you notice it, that you appreciate the effort to keep it open rather than let it revert to scrub and woodland. Local conservation work has kept it relatively intact, which matters more than most visitors realise.

Wokingham sits just to the north, so it's straightforward to reach, and Wellington Country Park lies only four miles away - a proper family spot with lakes and woodland if you want more structured activities. But Hazeley Heath itself? It works best for walkers who want solitude and don't mind a bit of exposed weather. Families with young kids might find it underwhelming unless they're keen on mud and long stretches without much to do. Allow two to three hours minimum, more if the light is good and you're in no rush.
