Heads of Ayr

The cliffs at Heads of Ayr rear up sudden and dramatic from the Ayrshire coastline, and on a clear day you get views that stretch down towards Galloway and out across the Firth of Clyde. It's a proper working coastline here - not prettified, just honest rock and sea and the occasional fishing boat making its way past. The walk down to the viewpoint itself takes about twenty minutes from the car park, nothing too strenuous, though the path gets narrower and muddier as you descend through the scrub towards the clifftop. Once you're there, you understand why people bother. The scale of it catches you off guard.

This is best for walkers who don't mind a bit of wind and anyone who wants coastal drama without the crowds. Kids will either love it or find it boring within an hour depending on their tolerance for standing still looking at water. The clifftops themselves aren't fenced, so keep a close eye on younger ones. Weather-dependent, obviously - timing it for clear skies makes all the difference. Go in the golden hour if you've got the time; the light transforms the sandstone.

Heads of Ayr works well as a morning or late-afternoon addition to a longer Ayrshire coastal walk, and it's close enough to Haven Craig Tara Holiday Park that you could easily slot it into a park-based holiday. Nothing fancy nearby, but that's rather the point. The coast doesn't need managing.
