Families with younger kids will get an hour, maybe ninety minutes out of it before someone asks to go back to the park for ice cream. But walkers who don't mind a gentle loop and birdwatchers will find it properly worthwhile. The path is flat and straightforward, no scrambling involved.

Rufford, the nearest town, is only a couple of miles south - useful for provisions and a decent cup of tea if the café facilities at the lake itself are sparse or closed (details on either front aren't straightforward to pin down). Go on a weekday morning in autumn or spring for the best light and fewest families throwing crisps at waterfowl.
