Heath Wood

Twenty minutes from Uttoxeter, this ancient woodland spreads across rolling Derbyshire hills like something from a fairy tale. Heath Wood isn't your manicured country park - it's proper wild forest where deer tracks crisscross muddy paths and ancient oaks tower overhead. The trees here are old, some centuries old, and on misty mornings the place feels genuinely primeval.

Families with adventurous kids will love the freedom to explore off the beaten track, though little ones might find the uneven terrain challenging. Dog walkers get the most from Heath Wood - it's brilliant for letting them off the lead in a safe, enclosed environment. Keen photographers should visit in autumn when the canopy turns spectacular shades of rust and gold.

Expect to spend a good two hours here if you're doing a proper walk. The paths aren't waymarked, so bring a map or be prepared to follow your nose. Come after rain and you'll need proper walking boots - the clay soil gets properly boggy.
