Parkgate Wood

Dense oak and ash canopy blocks out most daylight in this proper working woodland just outside Uttoxeter. Parkgate Wood feels properly wild - the sort of place where you'll hear woodpeckers before you spot them and where the paths aren't manicured into submission.

Walking here means accepting you'll get muddy boots. The tracks wind through different sections of the wood, from newer plantings to ancient-feeling stands where the trees have clearly been here decades. Families with young kids might find the going a bit rough in places, but older children who like scrambling over fallen logs will have a field day.

Birdwatchers do well here, particularly in early morning when the wood comes alive with activity. I spotted several species of tit and heard what I'm fairly sure was a nuthatch during my last visit. The lack of formal interpretation boards means you'll need to bring your own nature knowledge or a decent field guide.

Allow at least an hour for a proper explore, though you could easily spend longer if you're not in a rush. The wood connects well with other footpaths in the area, making it a decent addition to a longer countryside walk.
