Heather Wood

The woodland here is proper understated - no visitor centre, no gift shop, just trees and paths doing what they've done for years. Heather Wood sits just outside Doncaster, and it's the sort of place you head to when you want a proper walk without the crowds that swamp the Peak District or the South Yorkshire moorlands.

What you get is straightforward. Miles of woodland trails cutting through mixed forest, the occasional clearing where the light breaks through nicely, and enough varied terrain to keep things interesting. It's not challenging walking - more of a steady trundle - which makes it decent for families with kids old enough to manage their own legs, and absolutely spot-on for anyone after a couple of hours in the fresh air without drama.

The forest floor's soft underfoot most of the year, and if you're visiting in late summer you might catch heather flowering in patches, though honestly the best of it tends to be in late August or early September. Winter's fine too if you don't mind muddy boots.

If you're staying at Sunnyview Touring Park or Mooreacres nearby, this fills the gap brilliantly on a morning when you can't face driving further afield. It's the sort of woodland that rewards a slow pace - watch for wildlife, listen to the birdsong, that sort of thing. Don't expect drama or views. Just expect to remember why quiet woods are rather lovely.
