Heber Hill

The walk up Heber Hill takes about forty minutes from Barnoldswick, and it's a proper straightforward climb without much faffing about. You get decent views across the Pennines once you're up there, and on a clear day you can see right across the moorland - industrial Lancashire falling away behind you, the dales opening up ahead. It's not a dramatic peak, mind you. The summit's a bit underwhelming, just heather and gritstone, but the walk itself is solid and the effort feels worth it. Families with reasonably fit kids will manage it fine; it's the kind of thing you'd do on a Saturday morning without breaking a sweat. An hour or so round trip if you're not stopping, longer if you want to sit about taking photos. Best tackled in dry weather - the ground gets boggy otherwise and it becomes more of a slog. The route starts from Barnoldswick itself, which is handy. If you're staying at one of the glamping spots in the area - Coxons Farm, Thornton Hall, or Malham are all within five miles or so - this makes a decent leg-stretcher between days exploring the Yorkshire Dales properly. Worth doing if you're in the region; don't go out of your way for it alone, but paired with the bigger attractions nearby it rounds out a decent walking itinerary. The moorland gets windier and more exposed higher up, so watch the weather.
