Heights Plantation

A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured attraction, Heights Plantation sits just outside Appleby-in-Westmorland and offers the kind of forest ramble that feels genuinely quiet. You're walking through managed conifer plantations mostly - the sort of thing Cumbria does well - with decent paths that don't demand fell-walker fitness levels. The trees create decent shelter, which matters up here, and there's something peaceful about it even on busy weekends. It's the sort of place where you actually hear birdsong instead of other people. Families with kids aged seven or eight upwards will get something from it; younger children might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes. Dog walkers absolutely love it here, which tells you the paths are accessible and the ground is manageable year-round. Allow ninety minutes to two hours if you want to do a proper loop without rushing. The plantation isn't a destination in itself - it's a proper bit of countryside to stretch your legs, and that's entirely what it sets out to be.
