Helebridge Basin

The water at Helebridge Basin sits eerily still most days, ringed by steep banks and dense woodland that seems to swallow any noise. It's a proper local spot, the sort of place Bude residents come to without thinking much about it, which means you won't find crowds or any nonsense. The basin itself is a tidal reservoir - basically a chunk of the River Neet dammed up to create something between a lake and a working water system. You can walk the perimeter easily enough, though the banks are high in places and the path gets muddy after rain. There's a small car park at the top if you're staying at Atlantic Surf Pods or Wooda Farm Holiday Park nearby.

It's worth an hour's walk if you're in the area, particularly if you've got older kids or you just fancy a proper woodland mooch. The water's too murky for swimming, and there's no café or facilities to speak of - bring a flask if you're planning to linger. The real appeal is the quiet. You get the sense you're seeing something functional rather than designed for tourists, which is refreshing. On a grey Cornish morning, when the trees are dripping and the light's flat, it's genuinely atmospheric. You won't remember it as a highlight of your holiday, but you also won't regret the detour from Bude if you're keen on walking and don't mind a bit of nothing much happening.
