A timber-framed manor house that's been standing since medieval times, Hellens sits just outside Ledbury and feels like stepping into a room where nobody's bothered to tidy up for about five centuries. The black-and-white facade is genuinely striking - all wonky beams and character - but what really gets you is walking through the rooms. They're packed with original furniture, portraits of people long dead, and the kind of atmosphere that makes you understand why country houses matter. The gardens wrap around the place properly - nothing manicured, more overgrown and mysterious in the best way. Kids who like a bit of gothic atmosphere will be into it. Anyone bored by stately homes after ten minutes won't find anything here to change their mind.

Cwtch Cabins is barely a mile away if you want proper accommodation close by, or push to Caplor or Haywood Farm for more space. The town itself has good pubs and decent walks - the whole area rewards a slower pace. Admission and hours vary seasonally, so check ahead before you go. It's worth the short drive from wherever you're staying in the parks roundabout.
