Hemingford Grey Lake

The water here is perfectly still on a calm morning, reflecting willows and reeds like a mirror someone's forgotten to take down. Hemingford Grey Lake, just outside Huntingdon, is a proper nature reserve - the kind of place where you come to actually spot something rather than just walk past scenery.

It's a working gravel pit that's been left to do its thing, and that's precisely why it matters. Birdwatchers will spend hours here; the lake pulls in cormorants, great crested grebes, and if you're lucky, the odd kingfisher. There's a walk around the perimeter that takes the best part of an hour and doesn't demand much from your legs. Bring binoculars and a camera with a decent zoom.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit thin on entertainment if anyone's expecting a playground or a café - this isn't that sort of place. But if you've got teenagers who actually enjoy wildlife, or you're serious about birdwatching, you'll get real value from it. The reedy margins are fascinating to explore, and there's something genuinely peaceful about the whole setup.

Access appears to be free, though do check before you head out as reserve arrangements can change. Spring and autumn are peak seasons for migrant birds, so time your visit then if you're serious. It sits nicely within reach of Waterclose Meadows Campsite or Wyton Lakes if you're basing yourself in the area - close enough for a morning outing without eating up your whole day.
