Hemmel Wood

Hemmel Wood sits just outside Stocksfield and is the sort of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick drive-by. It's a straightforward working forest - conifers mostly, with the occasional broadleaf thrown in - that's great for stretching the legs without needing a full day of hiking. The woodland paths are easy enough for families, though the ground can be boggy in winter, so come prepared for mud. There's something quite meditative about walking through here, especially on a quiet weekday when you've got the place largely to yourself. Kids will enjoy spotting wildlife and foraging for interesting sticks. Allow a couple of hours to do it justice without rushing. The forest doesn't have the drama of somewhere like Kielder further north, and it won't knock your socks off with views, but it's honest work - good air, proper trees, and close enough to base yourself at Valley View Camping & Glamping if you're making a weekend of it. Spring and early summer are when the woodland floor comes alive; autumn's golden if the light's right. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so bring what you need. It's the kind of place that slots nicely into a broader Northumberland itinerary rather than being the headline act, but that's rather its charm.
