Hemsley Conservation Centre

The Hemsley Conservation Centre sits just outside Sevenoaks and punches well above its weight as a place to spend a couple of hours. It's a working conservation facility rather than a full-scale zoo, which means you're seeing animals that are actually being cared for with purpose - mostly rescues and species being bred as part of genuine conservation programmes.

What you'll find are smaller creatures, birds mostly, plus some mammals. Don't expect lions or elephants. This is intimate stuff. The enclosures are well-maintained and the animals visibly comfortable, which matters more than having the biggest collection. Families with younger kids do well here because it's compact enough that attention spans won't wane halfway through, though teenagers might find it a bit limited.

The real appeal lies in how hands-on it can be. Staff are generally keen to talk about what they're doing conservation-wise, and if you're into wildlife or breeding programmes, you'll find genuine substance in the conversations. It's the sort of place where you leave having learned something, rather than just ticked off a day out.

For a holiday based at one of the nearby parks - Thriftwood, Gatehouse Wood, or the excellent Badgells Wood Camping, all within two miles - this works as a half-day stop rather than an all-dayer. Pair it with a walk around Sevenoaks or a trip to one of the local nature reserves if the weather's good. Admission details vary, so check ahead, but it's reasonably priced for what's on offer.
