Hen Dinas Dinorwig

Rising 440 metres above the slate-scarred landscape near Llanberis, this modest summit offers surprisingly rewarding views across to Anglesey and the Menai Strait. The walk up takes about 45 minutes through old quarry workings - a proper scramble in places that'll get your heart pumping.

From the top, you can see right across to Bangor and beyond on a clear day. The real treat though is looking down into the dramatic quarry pits below, where turquoise pools reflect the sky in an almost Mediterranean way. It's quite something.

Walkers will love this one, especially those staying at nearby parks like Snowdon View Holiday Park or Llanberis Touring Park. Kids over eight should manage fine, but younger ones might struggle with the rocky sections. The path isn't marked brilliantly, so download a map app before you set off.

Allow two hours return from the car park near the old slate museum. Best tackled in dry conditions - those slate slopes get lethal when wet. It's free, naturally, and you can combine it nicely with a trip to the Electric Mountain visitor centre or a ride on the Snowdon Mountain Railway if the weather turns.
