Hengistbury Head Land Train

The Land Train trundles up Hengistbury Head at a pace that'd make a snail look ambitious, but that's rather the point. You're paying for the laziness of it, frankly - a chance to ride to the top of this Hampshire headland without actually having to walk the thing yourself.

It's a proper bit of seaside infrastructure, the sort of attraction that's been ferrying visitors up and down this sandy peninsula for decades. The views from the top are genuinely decent: you get Christchurch Harbour spreading out below, the Isle of Wight beyond if the weather's clear, and on a good day, you can see right across to the Needles. The journey itself takes about ten minutes each way, and you're sat in open-air carriages that rattle along a narrow-gauge railway.

Who'll enjoy it? Families with young kids or anyone who's knackered and wants the coastal scenery without the legwork. It's not exactly thrilling - if you're after adrenaline, look elsewhere - but it's honest, unpretentious seaside entertainment. The headland itself is worth exploring once you're up there: the Iron Age fortifications are genuinely interesting if you care about that sort of thing.

It'll cost you a few quid for the journey, but it's quick enough that you can do it alongside a proper walk around the head or the beaches below. If you're staying at Hoburne Naish Holiday Park nearby, it's absolutely worth the short drive into Christchurch. Go when the weather's on your side - it's not covered, and sitting in drizzle watching misty views loses its charm fast.
