Hergill Plantation

Hergill Plantation sits just outside Richmond in County Durham, a proper working forest that doesn't shout about itself. There's no visitor centre, no car park with a gift shop - just trees, tracks, and the sort of quiet you don't find near towns anymore. You walk in among conifers and broadleaves, following paths that cut through the woodland. In spring it's carpeted with bluebells. Come autumn and the light filters through bronze and gold. It's the kind of place where you notice things - bird calls, the smell of damp soil, how small you become under mature timber.

Walkers will get the most from it. There's no set trail, but you can wander for anything from twenty minutes to a couple of hours depending on mood. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after a while - there aren't playgrounds or viewpoints to break things up, so it depends whether your lot enjoys just walking through woodland without a destination. History enthusiasts won't find much to grab onto either.

Best visited in dry conditions when the tracks aren't boggy. Spring or early autumn beats summer if you want to actually see what's around you rather than walking through a tunnel of green. If you're staying at Hewn Yorkshire just down the road, it's an easy addition to a morning walk before heading into Richmond proper. The plantation works better as part of a larger day out than a standalone visit.
