Hermitage Wood

The woodland around Hermitage Wood, just outside Market Harborough, is proper quiet. You won't find manicured paths or visitor facilities here - it's the sort of place where you actually have to look for the path, which half the appeal is. Ancient trees crowd in tight, the ground's soft with years of leaf litter, and in spring the bluebells are genuinely something. The walk itself takes a couple of hours if you meander, which you will.

This works best for people who like their nature unpolished. Families with young kids might find it a bit rough underfoot and there's not much to actually stop and gawp at in the traditional sense - no viewpoints, no information boards. But if you're after a proper forest walk where you can hear yourself think, it delivers. Bring good boots and a map or phone GPS because the paths aren't always obvious.

It slots nicely into a park holiday around here - Get Lost In Nature is barely half a mile away if you want somewhere to base yourself, though honestly the wood itself is the main draw. There's nothing stopping you tackling it as a half-day outing from Market Harborough town centre either, which is about twenty minutes' drive. The best visit is probably autumn or spring when it's not too muddy and the insects aren't fierce. Summer can be properly claustrophobic under all that canopy.
