Heron Pond

A proper wildlife watching spot just outside Gloucester, Heron Pond lives up to its name during the quieter hours of dawn and dusk. The water sits in a natural hollow, fringed by mature willows and reeds that provide cover for the grey herons that hunt here regularly. I've spotted at least three on my visits, standing motionless in the shallows before striking with lightning precision.

Families with patient children will get the most from this peaceful spot. The pond supports a healthy population of fish, which draws not just herons but kingfishers, moorhens, and various duck species throughout the year. Early morning visits yield the best wildlife watching - the herons are less skittish and the light is lovely for photos.

It's a relatively small water body, so don't expect a lengthy ramble around the perimeter. Allow an hour or so for a proper visit, though wildlife enthusiasts could easily spend longer waiting for the perfect shot. The surrounding footpaths are well-maintained but can get muddy after rain.

For families staying at nearby Tudor Caravan Park or any of the other sites within a few miles, it makes a decent short excursion when the weather's fine. The lack of facilities means bringing a flask and some patience, but that's rather the point - this is nature on its own terms.
