WWT Slimbridge

The Wildfowl and Wetland Trust at Slimbridge is genuinely one of those places that surprises you with how absorbing it becomes. You'll spend hours watching geese, ducks, swans and waders from hides and viewing platforms dotted across 100 acres of wetland - and yes, you will see birds you've never spotted before, even if you're not a twitcher.

It's brilliant for families because there's proper activity beyond just standing around: you can help feed the birds, explore the hides at your own pace, and the younger ones won't lose interest after twenty minutes. There's a decent cafe and the site's well-maintained without feeling sterile. Walkers should allow at least three hours, though hardcore birdwatchers could easily camp there all day during migration seasons.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks within a couple of miles - Tudor Caravan Park is practically on the doorstep at half a mile away - Slimbridge works perfectly as a morning or afternoon outing. It's close enough to Gloucester that you could combine it with town exploring if the weather turns, but the wetland reserve is genuinely where the appeal lies.

The admission is paid entry, which is fair given the upkeep required. Best visited October through March when migratory flocks are in residence, though there's always plenty to see. It's not flashy or Instagram-heavy, but it's real natural history.
